Depending upon the size of the bag, 1 cubic yard of Topsoil = 40 to 50 bags.
Yes, a thin raking of soil on the lawn will replace the soil that eroded over the wintertime. This is called ‘top dressing’. It fills in the low spots and adds fresh nutrients to the soil. You can also add some additional grass seed and the seed will have a receptive environment from which to take root.

Topsoil is the outermost layer of the landscape, ranging from 2 to 8 inches deep. This layer has the highest concentration of organic matter and is where plants draw their nutrients from.
On Long Island, we frequently have a vast layer of sand just below the surface, which is good for drainage but does not keep the moisture up near the roots of the plants. In other areas we may find a dense layer of clay just below the surface, which is not readily penetrated by plant roots.
Optimally, a layer of 5 inches of Topsoil is recommended for lawns and gardens.
Topsoil is sold by the cubic yard. At one inch deep, one cubic yard will cover an area of 300 square feet (30 feet x 10 feet area). Use our calculator below to determine the amount of topsoil you will need:
